VHB Joining Systems are suited for use in many interior and exterior industrial applications. In many situations, they can replace rivets, spot welds, liquid adhesives and other permanent fasteners. Each product in the VHB family has specific strengths. These can include high tensile, shear and peel adhesion and resistance tosolvents, moisture and plasticiser migration. All VHB fasteners should be thoroughly evaluated by the user under actual use conditions with intended substrates, especially if expected use involves extreme environmental conditions.
VHB Joining Systems are suitable for bonding a variety of substrates, including sealed wood, many plastics, composites and metals. Plastics which can be a problem are polyethylene, polypropylene, teflon, silicones and other low surface energy materials. Plasticised vinyl bonding is dependent on the types and concentrations of plasticisers which can migrate into the adhesives causing a reduction in bond strength; 4910F is most resistant to plasticiser migration.
WHAT DOES VHB STAND FOR?
Very High Bond
WHAT IS 3M™ VHB™ TAPE USED FOR?
3M™ VHB™ tape is used to bond, seal and attach substrates including - metals, plastics and glass. VHB tapes are often used to replace mechanical fastening methods such as screws, rivets, welding etc. due to their high performance.
WHAT IS THE IDEAL APPLICATION TEMPERATURE FOR VHB TAPE?
Ideal application temperature range is 70°F to 100°F (21°C to 38°C).
Pressure sensitive adhesives use viscous flow to achieve substrate contact area.
Minimum suggested application temperatures: • 50°F (10°C): 3M™ VHB™ Tapes 5952 and RP families. • 60°F (15°C): 3M™ VHB™ Tape 4941 family.
Note: Initial tape application to surfaces at temperatures below these suggested minimums is not recommended because the adhesive becomes too firm to adhere readily. However, once properly applied, low temperature holding is generally satisfactory. To obtain good performance with all 3M™ VHB™ Tapes, it is important to ensure that the surfaces are dry and free of condensed moisture.
BEFORE SELECTING A VHB TAPE, WHAT FACTORS SHOULD YOU CONSIDER?
If you haven't previously used a VHB tape before for this specific application. You should consider the following before purchasing - what substrates are being bonded, the environment in which it will be used, the application, the temperature it will be in and weight of the load it needs to hold.
